Matthew 25 – The 10 Virgins

“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

They were all pure and holy, but wisdom or lack of it became the difference.

The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.

Isaiah 55:1

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

John 7:37

The currency of the spirit is thirst.
They lacked oil, the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the custodian and the revealer of the power and the wisdom of God.

Recall that David said, that –
‘Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path’.

But without oil (the Holy Spirit) in the lamp (Word), it can’t give light adequate for any form of motion.

Without the light, darkness (confusion, ignominy etc) prevails.
A song writer said, ‘How can You run when You don’t know the way of the spirit’.
It is the entrance(understanding) of the word that gives light, but understanding is not possible except through the Holy Spirit.

Remember, faith comes by hearing, and hearing(understanding) by the word of God. The Word is Spirit and Life.
Faith is a personal asset just like breathing. No one can breath for you. You have to breath for yourself to be alive!
Because the righteous shall live by his own faith, then the righteous must build up his faith personally.

Your faith is what will keep you in the days ahead when the tarrying for the return of the bridegroom gets to midnight.
Midnight is always a reference to the darkest part of the day. It connotes gloominess of some sort.
They were all expecting the bridegroom, but they all fell asleep, the oil became the difference maker.
I believe that for all the lamps to have been lit in the first place, they all had some measure of oil, but the foolish had no adequate or extra oil. It’s not about having oil, but having enough and extra oil.

The wisdom of the wise virgins therefore is the EXTRA OIL. This is a product of intimacy with the Holy Spirit. A product of a contant fellowship with the Spirit of Truth.

You purchase extra oil, not because it is needed here and now.
Extra oil is NOT always needed at the time of purchase!
That is to say,

• You may not feel like praying but go purchase extra oil – Pray!
• You may not feel like studying the Word of God but go for extra oil -Study!
• You may not feel like evangelizing but get some more oil – Preach!

Also, extra oil demands bigger vessels. Enlarge your capacity by consistently praying in the Holy Ghost. Jude put it this way,

‘Dear friends, by building(enlarge) yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,’

Jude 1:20 (emphasis mine)

They said to the foolish virgins ‘to go to them that sell and buy’.
You buy with the currency of your thirst from the Word and from anointed materials of those who has obtained .
Remember that Elisha told the widow of the Prophet to go borrow vessels and not a few. When you engage with the materials of men and women that have received from the Holy Spirt, you are borrowing vessels – from there encounters and years of interaction with the Holy Spirit –this is the wisdom of the just.

Lastly, as we enter this midnight phase of our waiting for the bridegroom, strive to be the difference maker. Notice that apart from the 10 virgins in this story, there was also the watchman that could pick the sound of the arrival of the bridegroom and to raise a cry.

Above being a wise virgin, also become a watchman Let it become your responsibility to check on your brethren to ensure they are not getting cold in there walk with the Holy Spirt. To ensure that they are adding/securing extra and adequate oil for their lamps because the bridegroom will come unexpected and many, if not woken up by watchmen, will be in a sleep state when the Master returns.
Please make a sincere pledge to yourself that henceforth, my lamp will NOT lack adequate oil.

LORD JESUS, I believe that you are the son of God. Thank you for dying in my place and rising again from death for my salvation and justification. Today, I confess you as the Lord of my life. I ask that your cleansing blood wash away my sins and make me clean before the Father.
Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who enables me live victoriously everyday and to bring me spotless into your kingdom and eternal rest.
Thank you for the gift of my salvation.
